Jim LaBelle, executive director of the Biddeford + Saco Chamber of Commerce + Industry, has announced plans to retire.
LaBelle, 60, took on the position in 2018.
"Working at the Chamber has been such a joy for me these past seven years", he said. "It's been the honor and privilege of my career to work with all the amazing and inspiring chamber members, local leaders, entrepreneurs and volunteers that I've been fortunate to get to know."
He’s been the guy with the big scissors on the ready at hundreds of ribbon cuttings, willing to step in to judge a dance competition at the beach or strike a pose while strutting down the runway at a Rotary fashion show. He’s friendly and eager to talk to new business owners, always seems to be in a good mood, and appears to really enjoy the two cities.
"I know I'm not objective, but I truly believe we live in the best community in Maine when you look at everything Biddeford and Saco has to offer in terms of the growing business ecosystem, our vibrant downtowns, enjoyment and adventure options, natural beauty, and especially the passionate people who make their home or are growing their business here,” said LaBelle.
Under LaBelle’s leadership, the Chamber introduced many new events, including the annual ChamberFest, held in the summer to showcase member businesses. Other events include Ten Talks, held at City Theater and featuring speakers from selected local leaders; and the Biddeford Beach Bash, a family-friendly beach party.
“Jim has done an amazing job transforming the Biddeford + Saco Chamber into an active and successful environment that has not only been successful in promoting local businesses but also advocating for both communities,” said Saco Mayor Jodi MacPhail.
Labelle said he is proud of the Chamber’s work in conjunction with other local non-profits to make the community stronger, and he hopes the next director will take the Chamber to greater heights in making a positive impact in the Biddeford-Saco area.
The job listing for a new executive director has been posted on Indeed.com.
He said he will help with the transition of the new hire, and then plans to “thoroughly enjoy” the Maine summer before considering future options in the fall.
