Saco Mayor Jodi MacPhail and the City Council recognized the Thornton Academy Boys Lacrosse team, the Maine Class A Champions, during Monday night’s meeting at Saco City Hall.

“I, along with the members of the City Council, would like to congratulate these players and their coaches for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to the sport,” said MacPhail. “And the community is very, very proud of you.”

The Trojan’s 8-6 victory came over a heavily favored Falmouth team, ending the Navigators’ 28-game winning streak.

The win gave Thornton Academy its third Class A lacrosse championship, joining the 2018 and 2019 teams, which also beat Falmouth in the title games, according to a press release from Thornton Academy.

In addition to reading the names of all the team's players and coaches, Mayor MacPhail acknowledged athletes Jack DeLeo and Grady Hersey, who were named to the Varsity Maine All-State team, and coach Ryan Hersey, who was honored as Coach of the Year.

Thornton Academy is a private school that serves as Saco’s public high school. Located at 428 Main St., Saco, Thornton Academy has boarding and day students, and private and publicly funded students in grades six through twelve.
