Spaghetti dinner on Monday will benefit family of Saco woman who died after she was struck by a car
SACO — A spaghetti dinner will be held on Monday to help the family of a woman who recently died after she was hit by a vehicle.
Li Zhen Wu, 73, was struck by a car while walking in a crosswalk on Bradley Street at 4:15 p.m. Nov. 1, according to police. She was taken by ambulance to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where she died of injuries related to the accident.
Wu was a fixture in the community. She and her husband, Song Li, could often be seen together walking in the neighborhood, pushing shopping carts, collecting bottles and cans for redemption.
Wu was known in her neighborhood as Ms. Li, according to Chelsea Hill, a Bradley Street resident who started an online fundraising campaign for Wu’s family that has raised more than $14,000.
The Nov. 1 accident was the second time Wu was struck by a car in the neighborhood, said Hill on the GoFundMe page. According to Hill, Wu was injured in a hit and run accident in February 2022.
“As a community, so many are devastated at this news. We hope that whatever amount we are able to collect is a symbol of the kindness and love of strangers in our little corner of Maine,” said Hill on the fundraising page.
St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 186 Bradley St., is hosting a spaghetti dinner fundraiser from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 20. The cost is a free-will offering and all proceeds will go to Wu’s family.
Wu was a neighbor of the church, said parishioner Pota Desjardins, and she and other church members admired their perseverance to earn money to support their family.
“They were the hardest working people. You’d see them out in the pouring rain, all kinds of weather,” she said.
