SMS students bring creativity to the table with food truck project

Saco Middle School’s 7th and 8th-grade students recently embarked on an exciting, hands-on learning experience as part of the Sebago Middle School team, culminating in a flavorful and educational event: Sebago Street Eats Night.

Throughout the third quarter, students worked in teams to develop their own food truck concepts, applying real-world skills in business, financial literacy, marketing, and culinary arts. They brainstormed creative menus, determined pricing, and designed advertising materials to promote their unique food truck brands. In addition to the planning process, students gained hands-on experience in budgeting, recipe development, cooking, and marketing as they brought their concepts to life.

"This project not only allowed students to explore different business ideas, but also gave them a chance to apply their learning in a meaningful way," said Christine Adams, a teacher on the Saco Middle School Sebago Project-Based Team. "Seeing them take ownership of their ideas and work together to make them a reality was truly inspiring."

 

The project culminated in Sebago Street Eats Night on Thursday, March 27, from when students proudly showcased their food truck creations to parents, students, and administrators. For a small fee, attendees had the opportunity to sample a wide variety of dishes, including rolling tacos, boba tea, ramen, kabobs, waffle ice cream, specialty burgers, pizza, lo mein, fried rice, chipotle bowls, and more. The event provided an opportunity for students to share their hard work with the community while fostering collaboration and creativity.

Students also expressed enthusiasm for the experience. 

"It was really fun to come up with our own food truck idea and see it all come together," said 8th grader Patrick Williams. "I never thought I’d be able to create my own menu and sell my food to people—this project made me feel like a real business owner!"
