Seventy-one-year-old man dies after Biddeford fire

A 71-year-old man died after a fire in an apartment in Biddeford on Monday.

The Biddeford Regional Communication Center received multiple calls regarding a building fire at the intersection of Alfred and Ray streets around 3 p.m. on Monday, according to a press release from the Biddeford Fire Department.

Biddeford firefighters along with firefighters from Arundel, Saco, Old Orchard Beach and Goodwins mills and Scarborough responded to the call.

Firefighters first on the scene found “heavy fire” coming from an apartment above a 28 by 28 foot, two car garage, according to the press release.

 

A 71-year-old man was found unconscious in the apartment. Emergency rescue personnel attempted life-saving care, but he died on scene, according to the press release.

The building sustained extensive fire and smoke damage and the fire department has determined that it is uninhabitable. The fire was brough under control in about an hour, according to the press release.

The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation by the State of Maine Fire Marshal’s office and the cause of death for the man found in the apartment is under investigation by the Biddeford Police Department, according to the press release.
