Person killed in Biddeford ICE-involved shooting said to be a man in his 20s

Information on the Biddeford fatal shooting involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) remains scarce.

Speaker of the House and Biddeford resident Ryan Fecteau stated on Facebook Monday morning, July 13, that a person was killed and ICE was involved.

The Biddeford Police Department later issued a press release stating that police had responded to calls for an incident involving ICE personnel at the intersection of Pool and Hill Streets. Biddeford police department’s only involvement is providing scene security, according to the statement.

ICE has not released any information as of press time. The Maine Immigrant Rights’ Coalition has stated that the person shot was a 26-year-old man from Columbia who had been issued a Social Security number.

U.S. Senator Angus King said at a media briefing that he had spoken to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullen. King said he learned that the person who had been killed was a man in his 20s and had been given an order to leave the country. The man was in a vehicle, and Mullen said he "weaponized" the vehicle and was shot by an ICE agent, according to King.

King said he was told that the ICE agents were not wearing body cameras so there is no video evidence of what occurred on Monday morning.

The intersection of Pool and Hill Street, and the surrounding area was blocked off by police tape on Monday morning.  

At noon, protestors rallied against ICE at Mechanics Park on Water Street, and later marched to Senator Susan Collins’ office on Main Street.

“It is unacceptable to have one of our own residents in the City of Biddeford be murdered by ICE,” said Biddeford City Councilor Abigail Woods. Woods said she had friends who had witnessed the incident.

“It’s happened here. It is happening here,” said Biddeford Councilor David Kurtz, “This is a very small city, and there’s a very decent chance that some decent person I know personally was killed this morning in broad daylight.”
