A local man died after he was struck by a train in Old Orchard Beach on Thursday afternoon.

Old Orchard Beach Police and Fire/Rescue units were dispatched to the area of the railroad tracks near 133 Temple Ave. around 2:18 p.m. on Thursday, June 26, according to a press release from the Old Orchard Beach Police Department.

Upon arriving at the scene, rescue workers discovered a pedestrian had been struck by an Amtrak train traveling northbound, according to the press release. The pedestrian, a 51-year-old man from Old Orchard Beach, was pronounced dead at the scene, said police. His name is being withheld pending further investigation and notification to the family.

Based on information obtained from witnesses, police believe the man was traveling alone and walking near the railroad tracks moments before he was struck by the train. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the incident, according to police.

The Saco police department also responded to the scene to provide assistance.

The incident remains under investigation by the Old Orchard Beach Police Department, Amtrak Police and Saco Police Department.
