New Saco City Councilors Jeffrey Onnen and William Gayle were sworn in on Monday night.
Onnen replaces former Ward 4 City Councilor Michael Burman, and Gayle replaces former Ward 5 City Councilor Phil Hatch. Both Burman and Hatch vacated their positions.
Saco Mayor Jodi MacPhail congratulated Onnen and Gayle and said she looked forward to working with them.
“I have had the pleasure of working with both of these gentlemen over the past few years, and have seen firsthand their dedication and willingness to serve the residents of Saco,” said MacPhail. “Jeff has been a respected and vital volunteer serving on the Shoreline Commission and Will has brought his knowledge of all things DOT to the traffic committee as well as serving on the School Board.”
MacPhail also thanked the city councilors who were leaving their seats that evening, as well as former City Councilor Joseph Gunn, who resigned in October due to a change of residency, and presented the three men with commemorative clocks.
“Joe, you were a vital part of this council, and we wish to recognize you as well,” she said, acknowledging Gunn.
She told Burman he had been a “strong and steady advocate” for the residents of Ward 4 and praised his commitment to shoreline issues.
“You have brought thoughtful and engaged conversations to the dais and have earned the respect of all sitting up here including myself,” she said. “I will miss your sense of humor during our long meetings and your ability to see and respect both sides of an issue or concern, and not be afraid of asking the questions that are needed.
MacPhail applauded Hatch’s ability to “think outside the box.”
“Your dedication, and most of all, your respect for the constituents, has been the push we needed to ask the tough questions and sometimes give the tough answers,” she said. “You have taught me more about zoning and land use than I’d ever though I’d needed or wanted, and you are an example for community and for giving back. You have always been there when I needed an ear to listen to, or a good debate, or just checking in to make sure I was okay during the busy times.
The City Council that evening appointed Councilor Joshua Parks as deputy mayor. The deputy mayor is nominated and elected by the Council for a one-year-term, and fills in for the mayor upon their absence.
