Biddeford City Councilor Bobby Mills suddenly announced his resignation from the city council on Tuesday afternoon.
Following an inquiry from Saco Bay News, Mills sent a text message confirming that he will also resign his post as York County treasurer, effective April 15.
Mills, who previously resigned from the council because of an address change in 2017, said he was resigning his current seat for “personal reasons.”
Mills was unopposed and re-elected to his Ward 4 council seat in November.
According to the city charter, because Mills has served fewer than 180 days since his last election, the city will need to hold a special election to fill his seat.
The Ward Four area includes the densely-packed residential neighborhoods behind Hannaford supermarket and along Granite Street Extension and Hill Street to West Street near the city’s core.
Mills has been a fixture in local politics for more than a decade.
In 2012, Mills unsuccessfully challenged fellow Democrat Megan Rochelo for her seat in the Maine House of Representatives.
In 2015, Mills successfully faced a five-way challenge to hold his city council seat in Ward Five.
Mills served on the Biddeford City Council from 2007 to 2017, and then from 2021 until his recent resignation.
According to the city’s website, Mills is a military veteran, having served in both the US Army Reserves and active-duty Marine Corps. He has a bachelor's degree in Political Science.
Mills has served as County Treasurer since 2018.
