On Sunday, hundreds of people will walk the streets of Saco to raise money for cancer programs and honor a special person.
Mary's Walk began in 1999 to honor Mary Kerry Libby, a much-loved member of the Saco-Biddeford community who passed away from Burkitt's Lymphoma. Since its inception, Mary’s Walk has raised more than $4.4 million for Maine Cancer Foundation, funding programs in Maine.
This year, Mary’s Walk will be held on Sunday, April 13. On-site registration will be held at 10 a.m. at Thornton Academy. The opening ceremony will be at 11:30 a.m. and the walk starts at noon.
Walkers will travel south on Main Street from Thornton Academy, turn right on to Water Street, and then turn right on to Elm Street. The walk will then continue north back to Main Street and end at the Thornton Academy campus. Intersection closures will remain in place until the last walker has passed to ensure the safety of event participants, according to a notice from the City of Saco.
Motorists should also not that due to Biddeford’s Elm Street Project, northbound traffic heading from Biddeford into Saco will be detoured from Elm Street to Main Street.
