Local Flavor: Ziggi's Coffee reopens in Saco

Ziggi’s Coffee is reopening in Saco on Tuesday, June 30.

The Colorado-based coffee shop opened at 3 Waterfall Drive in Saco in February 2024, becoming the first Ziggi’s coffee shop in Maine, and closed fall of the same year.

Local franchise owners James and LuAnn Barrett are reopening the drive-thru location at Waterfall Drive, located just off Route One.

“We’re excited to bring it back to Saco,” said James Barrett.

Barrett lives in Kingston, New Hampshire, but has a connection with Saco, and southern Maine in general. Growing up on the New Hampshire seacoast, he often went to the beach in York. He later played AAA football for the Southern Maine Raging Bulls, which held their practices in Saco.

This will be Barrett’s first retail enterprise- he is the Vice President of Enterprise Resiliency and also sells real estate. He’s no stranger to coffee, as his mother operates 17 Dunkin’s throughout New Hampshire and Massachusetts. This will still be the only Ziggi’s in Maine, and he hopes to open more locations.

Barrett decided that he wanted to get into the coffee business, and researched different franchises and opportunities.

“I really just aligned with Ziggi’s concept,” he said.

He said he likes that the Ziggi’s franchise is still family-owned. When he went out to Ziggi’s headquarters in Colorado for a training, he met franchise owners Brandon and Camrin Knudsen and had dinner with them. He said everyone at the Ziggi’s franchise is welcoming and friendly, and he also likes the menu.

“The food sets it apart from the other competitors,” he said.

The menu includes a wide range of coffee and tea drinks, smoothies, energy drinks, dirty sodas, baked goods and sandwiches.

His favorite menu items? The white chocolate peanut butter blender iced coffee drink and the turkey pesto panini.

The Saco location will celebrate its reopening next week with daily deals. Patrons who use a Ziggi’s Rewards account at time of purchase will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win Free Ziggi’s for a year.
