Dyer Library in Saco announces new remote work space

Dyer Library in Saco has completed its "Remote Work Through Libraries" project.

Funded by a $34,000 ARPA grant from the Maine State Library and the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development in 2024, the project delivers modern, functional spaces designed for Saco’s remote workers, entrepreneurs, students, and community groups.

"We constantly see patrons trying to manage remote careers and take calls in open public areas," said Sophie Smith, Executive Director of Dyer Library/Saco Museum. "Saco needs quiet, accessible options. Thanks to this grant, we’ve woven reliable, comfortable workspaces throughout the entire library, blending modern tools with our historic charm."

The project kicked off with a foundational capital upgrade to the library’s digital infrastructure, delivering a fast, commercial-grade Wi-Fi network and upgraded public printing capabilities.

With tech in place, the $34,000 grant was dedicated to creating high-impact physical workspaces. The centerpiece is a new meeting space in the Reference Room featuring a 15-foot glass wall that lets in natural light while dampening sound—ideal for groups of six to eight.

To ensure long-term value for taxpayers and grantors, the library invested in commercial-grade, ergonomic furniture designed for heavy daily use. The vast majority of these new furnishings were positioned on the main floor to maximize zero-barrier accessibility. Additional quiet nooks were added throughout the fiction and non-fiction stacks, providing durable, comfortable work spots across the building while keeping key tech close to staff desks for quick assistance.

The community is invited to drop by, tour the new spaces, log onto the upgraded Wi-Fi, and use this new work spot. Dyer Library is located at 371 Main St., Saco.
