Former Senator Justin Chenette bested current York County Commissioner Allen Sicard in the Democratic primary for the York County Commissioner District 3 seat.

Chenette will now move forward to the Nov. 8 general election, where he does not face any opposition from the Republican party.

The York County Commissioner District 3 covers Saco, Old Orchard Beach, Hollis and Buxton.

Overall, Chenette won the race 1,869 to 365. In Saco, he won 943 to 207; Old Orchard Beach 445 to 75, Buxton 259 to 58 and Hollis 222 to 25.

Chenette, of Saco, was a state senator from 2016 to 2020 and state representative from 2012 to 2016.

“Voters sent a clear message that they expect a more transparent, accessible, and accountable county government,” said Chenette. Together we will bring about a positive era of community-focused leadership to the county commission. I really appreciate voters' continued trust in me and our dedicated volunteer team for their hard work these past 9 months.”

Sicard, of Saco, presently serves as the chairman of the Board of York County Commissioners.

“I wish to thank my family (especially my wife Mary Kiely Sicard) and supporters who helped us in this long nine month campaign,” he wrote in a Facebook post. “I will serve out my term thru December 31st (in fact we have a tour of the courthouse and meeting today)….there is still much to do for the people of York County.”
