Senator Donna Bailey, D-Saco, has introduced a bill that would rename Goosefare Brook Bridge after Captain Christopher Cash.

On Thursday the Legislative Transportation Committee held a public hearing for LD37, a bill which directs the Department of Transportation to rename Goosefare Brook Bridge the Captain Christopher S. Cash Memorial Bridge. The Goosefare Brook Bridge is located on Route 9, connecting West Grand Avenue in the Ocean Park section of Old Orchard Beach to Seaside Avenue in Saco.

Cash, an Old Orchard Beach High School graduate, died June 24, 2004 in the line of duty in Iraq while serving in the North Carolina National Guard. He was posthumously awarded a Bronze Star for meritorious service, a Purple Heart for being injured in battle and a combat infantryman badge for his time spent fighting.

“Captain Christopher S. Cash, Sr. was a man who committed his life to helping others. He was known for his passions of running and fitness, his love for his family and his dedication to our country,” said Bailey. “In 2004, as part of a mission for Operation Iraqi Freedom, Captain Cash made the ultimate sacrifice to protect his soldiers, a job which he took very seriously. He touched the lives of all that he met, and they will forever be blessed by knowing him. By renaming the bridge, we can preserve Captain Christopher S. Cash’s memory and legacy for everyone."

The bill is co-sponsored by State Rep. Lori Gramlich of Old Orchard Beach

“This designation would serve as a lasting tribute to a man who gave his life and service to our country, embodying the highest ideals of courage, sacrifice and dedication,” she said.

The Transportation Committee voted unanimously in favor of renaming the bridge. The bill will be next sent to the Senate for a vote.
