The City of Biddeford is seeking proposals from artists to transform an old gas station sign into a welcoming guidepost.

The former CITGO sign at the Five Points intersection is a vertical column of five panels.

“This project aims to transform a key gateway into our downtown with an engaging, vibrant visual statement that reflects Biddeford’s rich industrial and cultural heritage, its creative energy, and its commitment to public art,” according to the request for qualifications.

Artists are encouraged to explore themes of community and connectivity, transformation and growth, and environmental and social resilience. The City Council will approve the final design in June.

The selected artist will receive a $1500 stipend and will work closely with city officials and the Downtown Development Commission to ensure the completed work of art reflects community values and meets site-specific requirements.

Public Art Commission

The project proposal coincides with the city’s newly approved Public Art Commission. The duties of the commission will include developing, maintaining and implementing a Public Art Master Plan for Biddeford and establishing procedures and guidelines for the review of proposed public art pieces.

The commission will be comprised on seven voting members – a city councilor and six volunteer community members. At least three of the six community members must have expertise in arts, culture, or humanities. The Commission will also include a student representative as an eighth non-voting member to provide a youth perspective.

Residents of Biddeford or those who work in Biddeford can apply to be part of the commission online.
