Age-Friendly Biddeford receives 2026 Spirit of America Award

The City of Biddeford has selected Age-Friendly Biddeford as the recipient of its 2026 Spirit of America Award in recognition of the organization’s outstanding volunteer service and dedication to the community.

Age-Friendly Biddeford, led by Executive Director Elizabeth “Betsy” Martin and powered by a dedicated team of community volunteers, works to support residents of all ages, particularly older adults, by promoting independence, social connection, and access to essential resources. Their work plays an important role in reducing isolation, supporting safe and healthy aging, and fostering opportunities for older adults to remain active participants in community life.

Age-Friendly Biddeford’s key initiatives include a volunteer transportation program that helps residents travel to medical appointments and other essential destinations, as well as the annual winter sand bucket delivery effort, which provides older residents with materials to help maintain safe walkways during the winter months. These and other services contribute to a more accessible and inclusive community for all Biddeford residents.

“Biddeford is a better, kinder, and more connected place because of the service provided by Age-Friendly Biddeford’s volunteers,” Mayor Liam LaFountain said. “I am thrilled to recognize them with the 2026 Spirit of America Award and extend my gratitude to every volunteer who gives their time and energy to this mission.”
