Many Saco residents and travelers who use Beach Street have likely noticed an ongoing construction project on Beach Street and the surrounding area.

The work is part of ongoing regional efforts by the Maine Water Company to improve regional infrastructure.

This particular project was last updated when Grover Cleveland was the president of the United States more than 130 years ago.

Maine Water officials say the work on Beach Street is “Phase Two” of a two-year water main replacement project, which includes 1,900 feet of replacement pipe

The city of Saco is also doing some sewer and storm infrastructure work in the same area, and the two organizations are coordinating their work.

Maine Water’s project will be completed this fall. The road will be given a base coat of pavement for the winter and a final surface paving in 2025.

Maine Water is flushing the water mains to keep fresh water to the temporary, above ground water lines, that provide water service during the project. The water flushed is not billed to customers.

Maine Water representatives said they understand that the project is inconvenient and they appreciate the public’s patience while they work to complete the project as quickly as possible.

A company spokesperson said the new water main is expected to last another 100 years.

Separately, Maine Water also routinely flushes fire hydrants, to ensure high quality water in everyone’s neighborhood. Often this confuses people because they don’t understand why this is done.

The online video below explains the project and provides information about periodic hydrant flushing.

Maine Water says the Saco River is an excellent source of high-quality drinking water, “but it does take some work to make sure that when you turn on your tap, you will have all the water you need.
