Want to weigh in on the naming of the rare brown and orange lobster at UNE?
BIDDEFORD — The University of New England is asking the public to weigh-in on the naming of the newest resident of the Arthur P. Girard Marine Science Center.
The university was recently given a rare two-toned lobster by Eric Payne from Inland Seafood Corporation in South Portland. The split-colored, brown and orange lobster is a one-in-50 million catch, according to UNE.
UNE asked community members on social media for suggestions of a name for the unique crustacean. After reviewing the responses, the university narrowed the search down to four choices, and is asking the public to weigh in on their favorite choice by responding to a
through Memorial Day weekend. The four choices are Banana Split – a nod to a yellow lobster named Banana who is also living at the marine science center, Reese’s, Checkers and Harvey Dent, after the comic book character also known as Two Face.
The two rare lobsters at the marine science center have a lot of fans, and perhaps the biggest one is Uliana Cavalier, a 7-year-old from Berwick. In February, she sent Banana, the yellow lobster, a Valentine’s Day card with the message “You’re My Lobster.”
Uliana got the chance to meet Banana as well as the yet-to-be-named orange and brown lobster earlier this week during a visit to the marine science center. She’s been interested in lobsters since the age of five, and was excited to meet Banana and learn more about her, according to a press release from UNE.
