BIDDEFORD — Over the weekend of April 10-11, the Birding Club at the University of New England raised $2,089 for the Biddeford Food Pantry by hosting a "Big Day" — a 24-hour bird-watching event funded by 31 sponsors at an average $.80 per bird.

The group birded for 24 straight hours starting at 2 a.m. in Kennebunkport and ending at Timber Point in Biddeford. They traveled to 17 different locations throughout York and Cumberland Counties and logged 97 individual species of birds.

The group is now raising funds to travel to the World Series of Birding — the country's largest and most prestigious birding event — in Cape May, New Jersey, next month.
