SACO — Thornton Academy players and coaches celebrated after winning the state Class A Football Championship on Saturday.

The Golden Trojans beat Portland 24-14, earning the team’s sixth state title since 2012. Saturday, Nov. 18, marked Thornton's eighth state championship appearances in 11 seasons, including the last five.

Thornton Academy is located at 438 Main St., Saco. Founded in 1811, it is co-educational, private boarding and day school serving students in grades six through twelve. Thornton has private pay students and also has publicly funded students who attend through contracts with local school departments.
