TA names George Sherry new Girls’ Soccer Coach

George Sherry is taking the helm as the head coach of the Thornton Academy girls’ soccer team.
Sherry has coached the girls’ soccer team at Waynflete school in Portland for the past seven years. Last season he guided the Waynflete Flyers to the Class C state championship, the program’s first in a decade.
The Tolland, Connecticut, native played four years of varsity men’s soccer while attending the University of Maine. Following his graduation in 1996, he coached the boys’ soccer program at Old Town High School.
Sherry brings extensive experience as a premier level soccer coach with the Portland-based Maine Lightning. He is also a long-time educator, and has worked at Saco Middle School for the past 26 years as a science, reading, and physical education teacher.
Thornton Academy, located at 438 Main St., Saco is a private school that serves publicly funded students from Saco, Dayton and Arundel in grades six through twelve through contracts with local school departments. The school also has private pay day and residential students from surrounding communities and across the globe.
