SACO — Ward 1 School Board Member Christina Shea is resigning from her seat on the board, effective Sept. 3.
Her voice shaking with emotion, Shea read a statement at Wednesday night’s school board meeting that she was resigning due to “unanticipated and deeply personal circumstances.” She thanked her fellow board members and Interim Superintendent Jeremy Ray for their friendship and support as she and her children went through a difficult time.
Shea thanked school department staff for addressing school board members concerns and collaborating with the School Board to give students the best education possible during a global pandemic.
“You give it your all, and it shows,” she said.
Shea was elected to the School Board in July 2020 after former School Board member Garrett Abrahamson resigned.
“She’s made an incredible contribution to this board in the time that she’s served and Ward 1 is going to be hard pressed to find someone to fill her shoes,” said School Board Member Jeffrey Richard.
School Board Member Beth Johnston said Shea contributed a great deal and learned the ropes quickly, and School Board Chairman Kevin Lafortune concurred.
“You really did dive straight in and hit the ground running,’ said Larfortune. He said Shea and others stepped up to help the school board get through some difficult times and make some positive changes.
School Board Member Sarah Truman said she valued Shea’s insight and also appreciated Shea’s willingness to ask “tough questions” so that board members could make informed decisions.
The Ward 1 seat is up for election in November, and so far, two Ward 1 residents - Ethan Alcorn and Margaret Mills - have taken out nomination papers. Nomination papers are available at the City Clerk’s office and must be returned to City Hall with 35 signatures by Sept. 3.
