Schlaver appointed Biddeford Ward 5 City Councilor
BIDDEFORD – Julian Schlaver was appointed Tuesday by Mayor Alan Casavant to fill a vacancy on the city council.
Schlaver’s nomination was unanimously approved by his fellow councilors who gave him a standing ovation.
Earlier this month, Amy Clearwater resigned her Ward Five council seat, citing a potential work conflict. Ward Five includes a bulk of the city’s downtown area.
Schlaver, 46, will serve the remainder of Clearwater’s term, which expires in December. Shortly before being sworn in on Tuesday, Schlaver said he will likely seek re-election to the post.
Schlaver described himself as a “business person,” and said he is excited to take on a more active role in the city. He currently serves on the city’s Downtown Development Commission and also served on the Mayor’s Ad-hoc Downtown Committee as well as many volunteer activities in Biddeford.
“Julian is passionate about Biddeford,” Casavant said just before offering the nomination. “He has contributed a lot of his time and effort in various projects and events in our city, and I think he offers this council a unique perspective.”
A resident of Union Street, Schlaver said he began visiting the area approximately 20 years ago when his father bought a home in Saco. “I fell in love with this area and the people here,” he said. “There is so much passion in this community.”
