SACO — Saco Middle School Principal Ken Hawkins has resigned.

The announcement was made at Wednesday night’s School Board meeting after a closed-door executive session that lasted about 50 minutes.

School Board Member Sarah Truman made a motion for the board to accept the resignation of Hawkins, “so he can focus on his family and the many needs that have been waylaid since the pandemic began.”

The motion was unanimously approved without further comment.

Hawkins’ resignation is effective Monday, Jan. 3, said Superintendent Jeremy Ray in an email Thursday morning. The district’s schools are currently on a holiday break through the end of the year.

Ray said the school department will work on finding an interim principal to finish out the school year.

Saco Middle School serves students in grades six through eight in Saco and is a choice for students in Dayton. According to data from the Maine Department of Education, there are 601 students enrolled in the school.

Hawkins became principal of Saco Middle School in 2019. He previously served as principal of K. A. Brett School in Tamworth, New Hampshire for five years and as assistant principal of York Middle School for nine years, according to a 2019 letter to the community from the Saco School Department.
