LYMAN – A Saco man led police on a pursuit after crashing into a cruiser with a stolen vehicle.
Around 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 30, State Police Cp. Kyle Wells was traveling southbound on Route 35 in Lyman when he saw a Maine Water company truck operating erratically - swerving in its lane and exceeding the speed limit, said Shannon Moss, public safety officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety, in a press release.
Wells turned on his emergency lights and the utility truck took off at a high rate of speed. The truck at one point, stopped completely before resuming travel toward Route 111, said Moss.
The pursuit continued westbound on Route 111 in Lyman when the driver of the truck pulled over to the side of the road and stopped the vehicle, said Moss. Cpl. Wells got out of the cruiser to speak to the utility truck driver, and the driver of the truck accelerated in reverse, striking the state police cruiser and putting it out of commission, said Moss. Wells was not injured.
The truck took off toward Alfred where it was intercepted by the York County Sheriff’s Office and a pursuit began and ended up crashing at the intersection of Kennebunk Pond and South Waterboro Road in Lyman, said Moss.
The truck was found to have been stolen and the operator, Ricky Cooper, 39, of Saco was suspended and on four sets of bail conditions, said Moss.
Cooper was transported to Maine Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries. Upon release, he will be arrested for Eluding an Officer, Reckless Conduct with a dangerous weapon, Violating Conditions of Release, and theft, said Moss.
The incident remains under investigation, said Moss.
