BIDDEFORD — Rotary Park beach is currently closed due to high E. coli levels.
An alert is posted on the top of the Biddeford Recreation
Department website that reads: “The water at Rotary Park Beach remains high for
e-coli. More testing will be done over the weekend.”
Rotary Park is a 72-acre park at 550 Main St. with a beach along the Saco River.
Escherichia coli, usually abbreviated as E. coli, are bacteria found in the environment, foods, and intestines of people and animals, according to information on the U.S. Geological Survey website.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, there are many strains E. coli. Most strains are harmless, and others can cause sickness. Some types of E. coli can cause diarrhea, while others cause urinary tract infections, respiratory illness and pneumonia, and other illnesses, according to the U.S Geological Survey.
