SACO — Ward 1 and Ward 3 residents still have time to get on the ballot for the upcoming school board election. With June elections being moved to July, the due date for nomination papers has been extended to May 15.

Ward 1 School Board member Garret Abrahamson resigned in December, and Ward 3 School Board member Emily Walters resigned in March, leaving two vacancies on the seven-member board.

The two empty seats were to be filled at a June 9 election, but the election date has been rescheduled to July 14 as Governor Janet Mills issued an executive order to move the June primary to July.

To qualify to be on the ballot, school board candidates must hand in nomination papers to the city clerk with 35 signatures of voters in their district.

With the new election date in place, the date to hand in nomination papers has been extended, said Saco City Clerk Michele Hughes.

Nomination papers must be turned in to City Hall by 4 p.m. on May 15, according to Hughes. The original date to turn in nomination papers was April 10.

David Precourt has turned in papers to run for the Ward 1 seat. Jeff Richard has announced he’s collecting signatures to run for the Ward 3 seat.

Both seats will be up for re-election November 2021.
