Neva Gross was named the new Biddeford Ward 5 City Councilor at a special meeting on Thursday.

Gross fills a seat vacated by Julian Schlaver, who announced in April that he was leaving the post due to personal reasons.

“I am excited to have been selected as the next City Councilor for Ward 5,” said Gross. “I look forward to the opportunity to serve the residents and businesses of Ward 5 and all of Biddeford.”

Gross was born and raised in Tampa, Florida and served eight years in the U.S. Army as a medic and operating room technician. She has lived in Maine since 2015, when she moved here to pursue her Doctorate of Pharmacy at the University of New England College of Pharmacy. Gross received a PharmD in 2020 and currently works as a supervisor at a 15-bed medical respite program for Preble Street in Greater Portland. She also previously worked as the manager of Batson River’s Biddeford restaurant, which is located in her Ward.

“I am pleased to appoint Neva as the next Ward 5 Councilor and look forward to working with her over the remainder of the term,” said Mayor Martin Grohman. “Neva’s unique experiences, like her work in the field of unhoused services, managing a popular restaurant here in Biddeford, and her eight years of service in the US Army as a medic, will bring a new and valuable perspective to our City Council.”
