Mary's Walk postponed due to weather
Mary’s Walk has been postponed to April 21.
Mary’s Walk is an annual fundraiser for the Maine Cancer Foundation, held in Saco in honor of Mary Kerry Libby, a local resident who died of Burkitt's Lymphoma in 1997. The walk takes participants down Main Street and through downtown Saco, and is typically held on the Sunday after St. Patrick’s day. It was scheduled this year for Sunday, March 24.
Event officials announced today (Saturday, March 23) that this year’s event has been rescheduled due to the weather. They said the Mary’s Walk Committee and Maine Cancer Foundation came to the decision with guidance from the City of Saco.
“Unfortunately, there is not enough time to clear snowbanks, ice, and standing water from the Mary’s Walk route to ensure the utmost safety for our walkers,” said event officials in a social media statement.
Since its inception in 1999, Mary’s Walk has raised more than $4.2 million for the Maine Cancer Foundation. All money raised for the Maine Cancer Foundation is used to benefit Maine residents, and is used to fund efforts that include cancer prevention, screening, and prevention programs as well as patient care initiatives.
According to the event’s website, Mary’s Walk is the largest cancer walk in Maine and in 2023 had more than 1,800 registered participants.
