Local photographer offers free prom photo shoots

SACO — Senior year isn’t going quite as planned for students this spring, and a local photographer is donating her time to help students create special moments.

Mary Lee Taylor is offering free prom photos through the end of the month for members of the class of 2020.

Taylor has nearly 35 years experience in the field of photography, and last year opened a studio, Mary Lee Taylor Photography, at 110 Main St., Saco.

Taylor said she loves photography because it gives her an outlet to express her creativity, meet new people, and the opportunity to, when she wants, work independently.

“I enjoy the duality of it,” she said. “I can work by myself and I can work with others. I’m a Gemini, I’m dual-natured,” she said.

Taylor, whose studio has been closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, was attending a remote photography workshop recently. There was a discussion by webinar viewers regarding “feel good” photography projects. This got Taylor thinking, and she came up with the idea of free prom photos.

“At this point of time, a lot of people are out of work and don’t have a lot of money,” she said.

Many area graduations have been postponed, and many proms have either been postponed or canceled. Taylor said she recalled her senior year of high school, and all the year-end celebrations and festivities, and she wanted to do something for local teens who have worked hard and deserved something special.

Taylor said she can take photos and maintain at least a six-foot distance. Those interested can get their photo taken with a date or a friend in formal attire.

“Photos can be formal, or relaxed or funny or all of the above. They can do outfit changes if they want,” said Taylor.

Since Taylor announced the special on social media, she has gotten several inquiries. She has scheduled a photo shoot this weekend with a graduating senior from Gorham High School. The teen was incredibly grateful for the opportunity and said the date of the photo shoot was when they were supposed to go to prom.

“It warms my heart,” said Taylor.
