Local Flavor: Saco Greek Festival
If you’ve got a hankering for authentic Greek food, whether it’s a pastry, appetizer or a full meal, you can satisfy that craving this weekend at the St. Demetrios Greek Festival.
The Ladies of St. Fotini church group have been cooking up a storm, preparing traditional Greek items from scratch using recipes handed down through generations. Pastries will include the always popular baklava – phyllo dough layered with nuts and honey, as well as an assortment of cookies and cakes.
Dinner items will include Greek roasted chicken, pastitsio – a pasta dish with ground meat, Romano cheese, spices and a Bechamel sauce, and spanakopita - phyllo dough layered with spinach, feta cheese, herbs and butter. The full menu is available online, if you want to come up with a game plan before you arrive.
There will also be dancing, church tours and music. The festival will be held at 186 Bradley St., Saco and will run July 12-14. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.
