Local Flavor: Old Orchard Beach restaurant to close this weekend and a Saco church carries on annual breakfast tradition
For many years, The Strike Zone, at 20 Old Orchard St., Old Orchard Beach has been a popular spot for a casual dinner or drink.
Along with J.J.’s Eatery, which closed earlier this year, The Strike Zone was one of the few sit-down eateries in downtown Old Orchard Beach that kept its lights on day and evening, year-round in downtown Old Orchard Beach
The Strike Zone announced it will be closing this weekend. The restaurant will open for the last day at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 29.
“There are so many of you who have been coming for so long that you have become friends and even our own Strike Zone family. We will miss seeing every one of you every day and hope that as many of you as possible will be able to pop in and share a smile or even a hug with us during this last week. You are appreciated more than you will ever know,” write restaurant management on the Strike Zone Facebook page.
In Saco, a local church is continuing a Maine tradition – the hunters’ breakfast. Deer hunting season for Maine residents starts Saturday, and local hunters can fuel up for the day with a stop at the annual Hunter’s Breakfast from 5-10 a.m. at North Saco Congregational Church at the corner of Heath, Rocky Hill and Flag Pond roads in Saco.
You don’t need to be a hunter to go to the hunter’s breakfast – anyone who wants to sit down to a hearty breakfast is welcome. The menu includes the typical breakfast fare – eggs, pancakes, bacon, home fries, toast, muffins, coffee and juice plus a special treat – pie. Yes, the hunter’s breakfast is the one time when it is not only okay, but it is encouraged, to eat a piece of pie with breakfast.
So don’t be shy about digging into a piece of pie after you finish your bacon and eggs. After all, you wouldn’t want to go against a long-standing Maine tradition. The cost of the meal is $10 for adults, $7 for children and $8 for a breakfast sandwich and slice of pie.
