Local Flavor: Hunter's breakfast and pie supper

Local Flavor: Hunter's breakfast and pie supper

Saturday is opening day for deer hunting for Maine residents, and a tradition for many hunters is to start the day with a hearty meal.

For many local hunters, North Saco Congregational Church at 126 Rocky Hill Road in Saco is the place to fuel up for the day. The church is once again hosting its annual hunter’s breakfast on Saturday from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m.

The menu includes eggs, bacon, pancakes, home fries, toast, pancakes, coffee, juice and pie. Yes, pie! The annual hunter’s breakfast is the one day a year when it’s okay to have dessert with your breakfast.

You don’t have to be a hunter to go to the hunter’s breakfast – you just need to enjoy good food and camaraderie. I went several years ago and in addition to the tables of hunters decked out in camouflage, there were several families enjoying a casual, home-style meal.

I personally will always remember the hunter’s breakfast because it was the first time I had ever had real mincemeat pie – with beef and apples. I was skeptical, but it was delicious. If this doesn’t appeal to you, don’t worry. As I recall, the there were several varieties of pie to choose from at the dessert table.

Speaking of pies, you can also have pie for dinner too. The Old Orchard Beach Knights of Columbus is hosting a Pie Supper on Saturday from 2 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. at the Saint Margaret Parish Hall at the corner of Old Orchard Street and Saco Avenue in Old Orchard Beach. The all-you-can-eat menu will include turkey pot pies, pork pies, coleslaw, pasta salad, soup, pickles, cranberry sauce, drinks and desserts. Proceeds will benefit the Holy Family Hospital in Bethlehem.
