OLD ORCHARD BEACH — A staff member at a popular downtown pizza stand was taken to the hospital this evening after an oven caught fire.

An oven at Lisa’s Pizza caught on fire after an employee was relighting the pilot light, said Old Orchard Beach Fire Captain Norman Gendron. The female employee was taken to the hospital with burns on her face and arms, he said.

The incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, according to the fire captain. Lisa’s Pizza is a takeout restaurant located on the main strip of downtown Old Orchard Beach at 17 Old Orchard St.

No one else was injured by the “flash fire,” which is suspected to have happened due to a buildup of gas after the oven’s pilot light went out, said Gendron.

There was no damage to the building, he said. The pizza stand closed down for the remainder of the evening and the Fire Marshal’s office came and inspected the restaurant, said Gendron.
