Minquansis Sapiel, an enrolled member of the Passamaquoddy Tribe from Sipayik, a tribe that is a part of the Wabanaki Confederacy, will give a talk on the Wabanaki WaterWays on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 6:30 p.m. at the McArthur Public Library, 270 Main St., Biddeford.
The event will be held in the library’s community room and is co-hosted by the McArthur Public Library and Biddeford Saco Area Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ).
The talk will shed light on how advanced Wabanaki people were when it came to wayfinding and navigating the Gulf of Maine. Sapiel will share stories of the very people who have inhabited this land way before it was known as the United States. She will also discuss climate change and the ongoing relationship with the waters that provide life for us.
Wednesday evening’s event is free, but donations will be accepted. Light refreshments will be provided.
Sapiel grew up on the Pleasant Point Passamaquoddy reservation. She is a social worker and author of the children’s book “Little People of the Dawn.” She also has a captain’s license and leads whale watching tours.
