Next year there will be a new free and fun option in Saco for kids to cool off on a hot day.

Ground was broken on Tuesday afternoon for a new splash pad next to the Saco Community Center on Franklin Street. The project was a collaboration between the Biddeford -Saco Rotary Club and the City of Saco.

The splash pad will be an interactive water play area with a variety of elements that spray, shoot, mist, or shower participants with water. The free, public facility will open in May, said Rotarian Brenda Pollock.

“This splash pad is not just about our club. It’s about community, and our connection to the community. This splash pad, we anticipate, will bring lots of joy and laughter and most importantly, community connection,” said Rotarian Paulette Bonneau.

It will provide a safe, accessible space for all children and families to cool off, play, and create memories, she said.

“This splash pad is not just a new facility. It’s a testament to the power of community, collaboration and the lasting impact we can make when we work together,” said Bonneau.

The splash pad was completely funded by monetary and in-kind donations, said Saco Parks and Recreation Director Ryan Sommer.

"We are incredibly blessed to receive this gift from the Rotary Club of Biddeford-Saco, which will bring years of fun and enjoyment to the youth of Saco. On behalf of all of us in Saco I extend a very big thank you to members Brenda Pollock, Bill Kany, Paulette Bonneau and all of the volunteers and sponsors who helped bring this special project to fruition,” said Mayor Jodi MacPhail.
