OLD ORCHARD BEACH — Longtime firefighter John Gilboy has been named the town’s interim Fire Chief.

Gilboy fills a position that was left vacant when former Fire Chief Fred LaMontagne resigned Nov. 4 to pursue a job in the private sector.

This is the second appointment Gilboy has received this month. On Nov. 1 he was promoted from Captain to Deputy Fire Chief. Two weeks later, at the Tuesday, Nov. 15 Town Council meeting, he was appointed and sworn in as the interim Fire Chief and Interim Emergency Management Director. The appointment runs through May 15, 2023.

Gilboy has more than 26 years of experience serving in the Old Orchard Beach Fire department. Town Manager Diana Asanza said Gilboy worked closely with LaMontagne, and was well positioned to take on the role as Interim Fire Chief.

“I’m thrilled that he will assist the town during this transition,” said Asanza. “I can’t thank him enough for his commitment and his dedication to the department and to the town.”

The Old Orchard Beach Fire Department responds to a variety of calls for service, and averages 2600 calls per year, 80 percent of which are EMS calls, according to information on the Fire Department’s website.
