Flooding causes road closures in Old Orchard Beach and Saco
Old Orchard Beach and Saco have announced road closures due to flooding.
The town of Old Orchard Beach issued a notice about 12:45 p.m. today, Wednesday, Jan. 10 stating that West Grand Avenue from Tripoli Avenue to the Saco line was closed to all traffic, and that all side streets in that area were also closed.
“We urge you to travel safely as there is debris on many roads near the coastline,” stated town officials.
After an overnight storm that brought heavy winds and 1-3 inches of rain, the National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for York County until 3 p.m. Snowmelt and extreme high tides have exacerbated the conditions.
High tide this morning in Old Orchard Beach was 9:36, and the next high tide will occur at 10:21 p.m.
In Saco, city officials issued a notice this morning that access to Camp Ellis was temporarily restricted until further notice. Traffic was also limited to local access only on roads in the Seaside Avenue area, as well as some streets in the Ferry Road area.
The National Weather Service offers some precautionary measures for those driving during floods.
• "Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles."
• "Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding."
