SACO — The school year ends in June, and so will Superintendent of Schools Dominic DePatsy’s tenure at the school department.

After an executive session closed off to the public, it was announced at Wednesday night’s school board meeting that DePatsy would be resigning, and his last day would be June 30, 2021.

DePatsy appeared on video during the meeting, which was held remotely through Zoom, while School Board Chairman Arthur Tardif read DePatsy’s resignation letter.

Through the letter read by Tardif, DePatsy said he was resigning to “explore other educational and business opportunities.”

“I will do everything possible to make this a smooth transition through these uncertain times. As you look for my replacement over the next several months, this should give you ample time to conduct an appropriate search,” DePatsy stated in the letter read by Tardif.

In the letter read by Tardif, DePatsy thanked the school board for the opportunity to work with them for the past six years, and he said he’s thoroughly enjoyed his time with the Saco School department. In the letter, DePatsy listed some of his accomplishments, including professional growth opportunities, technology and integration programs, project-based education and establishing a Pre-K program.

Tardif thanked DePatsy for giving ample time before his resignation so he could continue to work with the school board through the school year, and school board members Lynn Leary and Stephen Shiman said they accepted his resignation “with regret.”

School Board member Beth Johnston said while she and DePatsy had not always agreed on things, and sometimes DePatsy had taken “the bull by the horns” without necessarily talking with the board, she did appreciate the work he had done for the school district and his contributions.
