SACO — There are some members of the community who go above and beyond what is expected of them. Two of these community members –Alejandra Herrera and Nick Scontras- have been recognized with the Spirit of America Award.

The Spirit of America Foundation is a non-profit established in 1990 to honor volunteerism. The annual Spirit of America Foundation awards are presented in conjunction with Maine municipalities and school districts to honor local individuals, projects or organizations for their community service.

Herrera volunteered her time to help feed local seniors through the meal program during the pandemic's early stages. She is always willing to help those in need and always greets her customers at her downtown restaurant, Quiero Café, as if they are old friends.

Scontras is very active in the community, from working at the Saco Hannaford to being a Thornton Academy alumni and volunteering at a local church. Starting in 1985, Scontras participated in Maine's Special Olympics Winter and Summer Games as an athlete, volunteer, and fundraiser. He  is known for his positive attitude and sense of humor.
