Biddeford police sergeant dies in car crash
A Biddeford police officer was killed in a car accident on the Piscataqua River Bridge early Thursday morning.
State Troopers responded to a crash involving two cars on the southbound Piscataqua River Bridge around 1:14 a.m. on Thursday, according to a press release from Shannon Moss, public safety officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety. The bridge connects Maine and New Hampshire on I 95.
According to the initial investigation, traffic had stopped on the boarder of Maine and New Hampshire due to a crash in New Hampshire, said Moss. A box truck was stopped on the Maine side of the bridge when a Toyota Camry driven by Jacob Wolterbeek, 41, of Portsmouth crashed into the rear of the box truck, said Moss. Wolterbeek was pronounced dead on the scene.
Wolterbeek was a Biddeford police sergeant and was driving home from work at the time of the accident, according to a press release from Biddeford Police Chief JoAnne Fisk. Wolterbeek was an 18-year veteran of the department and leaves behind a wife and three children, said Fisk.
“Sergeant Wolterbeek was a respected member of the Biddeford Police Department and a valued City employee,” said Fisk. “In this time of sorrow, our thoughts and prayers are with Sergeant Wolterbeek’s family, friends, and colleagues. We extend our deepest condolences and offer our full support to them during this difficult time.”
