Biddeford Mayor Marty Grohman issued a statement this week regarding a recent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid in the city.

Multiple calls to the ICE Office of Public Affairs phone number for media inquiries resulted in a busy signal. Saco Bay News sent an email to the ICE Office of Public Affairs but did not receive a reply.

Grohman’s statement is as follows:

“As Mayor of Biddeford, I want to reaffirm our commitment to being a welcoming and safe community for all residents. Recently, there have been concerns about the presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in our city. I want to address these concerns directly.

The City of Biddeford does not direct or coordinate immigration enforcement actions. Local law enforcement remains focused on public safety and community well-being, not on enforcing federal immigration policies. Our police officers are here to protect and serve everyone in Biddeford, regardless of immigration status.

I was discouraged by the video and information that is circulating showing Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducting a response in Biddeford to question the immigration status of local workers. Biddeford has deep roots as a community of immigrants, dating all the way back to our beginnings, as well as the heyday of our mills. I do not want our vibrant hometown to become a community where all are not welcomed. I want all of our residents to feel safe and part of our proud community.

We recognize that the presence of ICE can cause fear and uncertainty. I want to assure residents that our city values inclusivity, fairness, and trust between the community and law enforcement. If you have concerns or need legal assistance, I encourage you to reach out to trusted community organizations that can provide guidance and support.

We are committed to fostering a city where all residents feel safe, respected, and supported. If you have questions, my office is always open for discussion.”
