SACO — Arthur “Art” Tardif has resigned from the Ward 5 School Board seat.

Tardif left the position due to medical reasons, according to a memo to the School Board from Interim Superintendent Jeremy Ray.

Tardif had served on the school board for three years, with one year as chairman. Prior to his service on the School Board, he served for more than 20 years on the City Council.

The School Board accepted Tardif’s resignation at its Wednesday night meeting. Tardif was not present.

School Board Chairman Kevin Lafortune thanked Tardif for his service to Saco as a school board member, city councilor and police officer; and wished him well.

“He’s been a fixture (in Saco) since before I was born,” said Lafortune.

School Board Member Beth Johnston said she appreciated Tardif’s dedication to Saco.

“Art Tardif has given a lot of time, energy and years to the City of Saco,” she said.

School Board Member Christina Shea said she didn’t think anyone in Saco could match Tardif’s commitment to public service.

The Ward 5 seat is up for election in November. Nomination papers are available at the City Clerk’s office and must be returned with 35 signatures by Sept. 3. Kerry Grover is running for the Ward 5 seat, and William Gayle has taken out nomination papers.
